About this test

Total cholesterol adds up all the cholesterol carried in your blood, in HDL, LDL, and other particles. On its own it is a blunt number: two people with the same total can carry very different risk depending on how it splits.

It is read with HDL and triglycerides, and where available LDL or ApoB, to make a lipid picture. It moves with diet, weight, genetics, thyroid function, and cholesterol-lowering treatment, and it is commonly rechecked yearly.

Reading your result

Total cholesterol rises with saturated fat, weight gain, an underactive thyroid, and genetics, and falls with diet change, weight loss, and cholesterol-lowering medicines. Pregnancy and acute illness can shift it temporarily.

Because it bundles HDL with the rest, a change in the total can mean different things, which is why it is read with HDL, triglycerides, and, when available, LDL or ApoB rather than tracked on its own over time.
