About this test

High-sensitivity CRP measures the same inflammation protein as a standard CRP, but at the low levels that matter for heart risk. Persistent low-grade inflammation is one of the factors that adds to cholesterol in predicting heart events.

A single value can be thrown off by a cold, an injury, or a recent workout, so it is usually drawn when you feel well and often repeated once. It is read alongside a lipid picture, blood pressure, and family history.

Reading your result

hs-CRP jumps with any recent infection, injury, dental work, or hard workout, and it runs higher with excess weight, smoking, and poor sleep. Statins, exercise, and weight loss tend to lower it.

For heart risk, clinicians average two readings taken about two weeks apart, when you feel well. A value that stays elevated is read next to a lipid picture, blood pressure, weight, and family history rather than on its own.
