About this test

PSA is a protein made by the prostate, and a small amount normally circulates in blood. It rises with prostate enlargement, inflammation, and cancer, so it is a screening number rather than a verdict.

It is read against age and a personal baseline; the trend over years often says more than one value. Recent ejaculation, vigorous cycling, a urinary infection, and some medicines move it, and a borderline result is usually repeated.

Reading your result

PSA rises with age, prostate enlargement, inflammation or infection, recent ejaculation, cycling, and some procedures, and it falls with medicines used for enlargement. Cancer is one cause among several.

A borderline value is usually repeated some weeks later, and the trend over years matters more than one number. Recent ejaculation or hard cycling can raise it, which is one more reason a single borderline result is repeated.
