About this test

Insulin is the hormone that moves sugar from blood into cells. When cells stop responding well, the pancreas makes more of it to compensate, so a fasting insulin level can rise before blood sugar does.

A fasting insulin is read next to fasting glucose and A1c. A high value with normal sugar is the pattern people call insulin resistance; it moves with weight, sleep, activity, and diet, and it is commonly rechecked while those change.

Reading your result

Fasting insulin rises with weight gain, inactivity, poor sleep, and diets high in refined carbohydrate, and it falls as those reverse. Not fasting for the draw is a common reason for an unexpectedly high value.

Some medicines and conditions, including PCOS and steroid treatment, raise it. It is read with glucose and A1c together, and the direction over months matters more than one number, which is why a single value is rarely acted on alone.
