About this test

An HSV-2 IgG test measures type-specific antibodies to the virus that causes most genital herpes. Antibodies take weeks to months to build, so a test soon after a possible exposure can be too early; a clinician can advise on timing.

Because low-positive results can be false, positives are automatically retested by a second method. A positive means exposure at some point, not when or where; many people carry HSV without ever noticing symptoms.

Reading your result

Antibodies build over weeks to months after exposure, so a recent infection can test negative and a repeat later is often suggested. Once positive, antibodies usually persist long-term; the level does not track outbreaks.

Low positives are the ones most often false, which is why they are retested automatically. Once positive, the antibody level does not track outbreaks or infectiousness, so repeating the test over time adds little.
