About this test

Estradiol is the main estrogen. In people who menstruate it rises and falls through the cycle, peaking before ovulation; in perimenopause it swings widely before settling low. It also matters for bone, mood, and hormone therapy.

Because it changes by the day, the cycle day of the draw is part of reading the result. It is usually paired with FSH and LH for cycle and perimenopause questions, and with testosterone in male hormone workups.

Reading your result

Estradiol changes by the day of your cycle, peaks before ovulation, drops after menopause, and is suppressed by hormonal birth control. Hormone therapy raises it, and body weight and heavy exercise can shift it.

In men it rises with body fat and with testosterone therapy, which is why it is checked alongside testosterone. Because a standard assay is less precise at male and postmenopausal levels, a borderline value there is often repeated.
