About this test
C-reactive protein is a protein the liver releases within hours of inflammation or infection anywhere in the body. It rises fast and falls fast, which makes it useful for following a flare or an infection over days.
It does not say where the inflammation is or what caused it, so it is read with symptoms and often with a sed rate. A standard CRP is for active inflammation; hs-CRP measures the same protein at the low levels used for heart risk.
Reading your result
CRP rises with any infection, injury, surgery, dental work, or flare of an inflammatory condition, and with excess weight and smoking. It falls as the cause settles, usually within days.
A single mild elevation without symptoms is often repeated some weeks later, since a cold or a hard workout can explain it. It is not affected by fasting or the time of day, so no prep is needed for the draw.
